Oscars 2013: Best Dressed

Overall the show didn't wow me. I'm not blaming Seth MacFarlane. He's adorable and friend Alicia and I wanted to just eat him up and/or pet him the whole night. Pet him? Yeah, maybe.

We talked through a lot of it, which if you know me means it couldn't have been that great (or that Alicia and I just talk, a lot )...I'm fairly certain I missed most of the craziest jokes. I did love Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum dancing (where did  that come from?), and all the pretty pretty boys in the opening.

I saw very few of the films that were nominated this year. Basically just Les Mis...yep, that's it.

I felt like the fashions were nothing particularly special and many wore what they always seem to wear. A lot of beads and sequins and bullion and embellishments this year. I'm over it.

There was also a trend of poorly fitted busts. Leaving the rest out of it, Jennifer Lawrence's bust fit so poorly. Same with Jennifer Aniston's and many others that either needed a lot more structure or just got crumpled and were rather sad looking.

Charlize Theron in Dior.
She's my major girl crush and will always be.
Short hair goddess in white.

Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen.
Was better on film. I was on the fence about this dress for awhile,
but when she doesn't slouch her shoulders and collapse
the neckline and when you get the full shot it's rather divine. 

Jessica Chastain in Armani
This gown is the perfect color between her skin and hair.
It's also beautifully beaded without being overwhelming.

Kerry Washinton in Mui Mui
This dress also grew on me.
I didn't like it so much on the red carpet.
BUT, the skirt sold me during her presentation.
The color is amazing. I am not sick of coral yet. 

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji
Either Octavia or her stylist knows how to dress this woman.
 Last year she was stunning, this year as well. 

Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka
She looked better than any other Chicago performer.
Seeing her on stage giving an award to Adele made my life. 

2012 Primetime Emmy Awards

I've never watched the Emmys before bc frankly I have never really cared. I stopped watching TV in the middle of high school and really didn't pick it up again until last year, but I'm with my sister for the weekend so I actually had a TV for to watch the Emmys on. So here's the rundown. I will say overall I was impressed as I was appalled at the informality of last year's Oscars, mostly in hairdos. And I didn't watch much pregame, so I'll only really be speaking to the fashions during the show...aaaaand I'm really not "in the mood" but this was a request, so here you go!

Tina Fey wins the prize of my heart, always. She's my hero and I want to be her minus the acting part...but maybe? She's just great and is always a hit with me in the dressing department. She's classy and appropriate and simple, but always with a little something special.

I can't get over Julia Louis Dreyfus' dress. It was special and classy and the skirt was just to die for when you saw it on screen.

Hayden Panettiere's dress was much more special than this straight on. It was very interesting and while I dunno if I'd wear it it was something great.

My sister and I couldn't get over how great Claire Danes looked! Of all the yellow at the show (and it was everywhere!) I liked hers the best. We bet it's the maternity glow that makes her looks so great. But really, she was stunning, and oh Hugh Dancy, you could have had me!

Jane Levy. I dunno who this girl is, it's amazing how much TV I have no idea about, but I like her styling and the color and the dress overall. Nothing incredibly new, but just really nice all the same.

Ok...here are some iffy ones...

Lucy Lui. This dress is amazing and she looks amazing, but it confuses me and reminds me of the princess during the pageant of The Swan Princess that's from where they make all the armor and she has shields all over her face...

Julianna Margulies. I appreciate a print, and I actually don't mind this one. It filmed a lot better and was metallic and I don't mind the 60s upholstery look. I am confused abou t the center front seam though...Jury's out on this one.

I've been rewatching 30 Rock and when I saw Edie Falco on the red carpet I was like "Hey! It's CC!". Turns out she's also Nurse Jackie....anyway, I don't have anything against this dress, I'm just pointing out US Weekly had a spread last week of 5 other girls wearing it too, wah wah. One week too late!

Cumberbatch and Sherlock win awards

Sherlock won best movie or mini-series at the Critics' Choice TV Awards and Benedict Cumberbatch won best actor in a movie or mini-series. I think with all this high praise Ben should film series three then take some down time to lead at a US regional theatre, and I know of just the one (USF, cough cough).

Oscars: Fashion: The Bad: Women

In general I'd say that not many looks were awful, but many of them bored me.


Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace. This dress is actually amazing. I love it. I hate the hair style and color, the dumb leg, the chicken bone arms and the lack of powdering off the entire evening. It's all rather harsh, but all things that could be fixed easily.

Kristen Wiig in J. Mendel. Not a bad dress but she just did nude. It's the Oscars Wiig! Mix it up!

Viola Davis in Vera Wang. The color is divine, the bodice is a fun idea, everything else is wrong. Too much boob, the skirt is busy and strange.

Cameron Diaz in Gucci. Yawn. I swear she's worn this dress before. It really is rather lovely, especially the glimmer of shine on the skirt. Ms Diaz has just done the whites, creams and pinks before here, here, here, here, and here.

Anna Faris in Diane von Furstenburg. What is this? Ug, not good for her figure, and what's that line? During the red carpet I thought it was her structure line, now I have no idea. Like the manicure though.

Melissa Leo in Reem Acra. Ill fitting and why does a sequined, nude colored undershirt thing need a collar? It's just strange.

Berenice Bejo in Elie Saab. I love the collection this gown came from, but I hate this dress on Bejo. The color, the cut, her hair, it's just all terrible. I'm surprised she looks at least decent in this photo, bc on the screen she looked awful. Sorry Berenice!

Oscars: Fashion: The Men

Tom Hanks. Tom Freakin' Hanks. Could this get any better? Amazing shawl collar, double breasted, perfect pocket square, wonderful bow tie, spot on cuff length, and the shaping. THE SHAPING. He looks absolutely stunning in this tux. If you watched pre-game on ABC you saw him walking around back stage and this tuxedo is just the bee's knees. I can't pick a best dressed woman, but he wins for men, followed closely by Mr. Firth.

It's the year of the shawl collar, and I love it (influence of 1920s that are on fire since The Artist and Downton). Firth's got the single breasted tuxedo down. I just can't not smile when I see Mr. Firth. Highlight of the show. Goes to show that the best men own/rent more than one tuxedo and Messrs. Hanks and Firth really think about what they're going to wear, or their wives do (I pretend the men care).

Christopher Plummer. You   work   that   velvet. I've said before, if you veer away from traditional black tie you'd better do it in a classy way. I'd say a velvet dinner jacket with braid piping works in a big way.

 James Earl Jones, shawl collar, black waistcoat. I'd only change his collar to a turn down (do I need to remind you that wing collars are only for white ties?). It's just really nice and age appropriate and classy.

Bret McKenzie. Way to go. I just can't say enough for the shawl collars this year.

Oscars: Fashion: The Good: Women

Ok, these are going to be a series bc they're just too much to do all at once. We'll start with my best dressed women, move onto best dressed men, then the bad...

Basically in the order I found them on MTV's site, working off a list I made during the show.

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton. I love the color, which is coral, not red, not orange. Her hair is sans headband which is the way to go. Love the make up, love the jewelry. It's just great!

Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli Couture. I love the color. I personally don't like high necks but she's working it. The bow is playful, as was she. Refreshing to see fuller skirts this season.

Natalie Portman in vintage Dior. Of course I love it! It's Dior! Love the color, the cut, the velvet polka dots. She had my favorite jewels of the night.

Penelope Cruz in Giorgio Armani. Another full, diaphanous skirt. Love the color, love the styling, love the jewels. I loved watching her walk across the stage. A delightfully feminine and classic dress.

Sandra Bullock in Marchesa. Rather daring to go so shapeless on top, but the gold work is divine, the cream and black contrast is lovely and the back is to die for. Sandy can do no wrong in my eyes.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen. On screen this dress was rather dull, but it absolutely shines on film. Oh Alexander McQueen, you do opulent embroidery like nobody's bizz. Hate the hair. This is the Oscars people, not a beach wedding, tie it back!

Tina Fey in custom Carolina Herrera. Tina's a classy lady. I just love this dress so so much and the lady wearing it.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford. I freaking loved this ensemble. Loved the cape. Loved the dress without it. Gwyenth totally rocks the absolutely simple and clean looks. Pony tail hair? Dumb.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji. You rock it girl. This dress is so flattering and moved like a dream and is just so ravishing and fantastic. The skirt silhouette is absolutely Venus de Milo and the train is divine.

Oscars: First Response

Real quick rundown. Keep in mind that I know a lot of people are cynical about the Oscars, but I eat them the F up and wait all year for them.

:-: THAT'S how you host the Oscars. Thank you Billy Crystal, well done, well done. Kept the momentum, the jokes were funny but not preachy and you wrapped it up like a champ. Reminded why I love When Harry Met Sally.
:-: I could watch Jean Dujardin make faces all day. I'm sure when I actually see The Artist  I'll absolutely die the whole time.
:-: Boyfriend Benedict Cumberbatch was shown for like a second (remind me to tell you about the dream I had where Benedict Cumberbatch was my boyfriend and I called him "Ben").
:-: Cirque, you are da bomb, seriously.
:-: Will Farrell and Zamch Galdfskljfdsoijsda with cymbals is a win, always. Awkward trophy girl, also a win.
:-: Great year for speeches, nothing overly dramatic or political (Except for Best Foreign and Best Doc, which was necessary and appreciated). Best speeches: the editors that decided to just leave, Octavia Spencer, Christopher Plummer, Jean Dujardin, and Meryl Streep.
:-: MERYL STREEP! I love how real she is. She wears reading glasses, she knows she's never going to win again, she thanks her husband first. She's a classy lady.
:-: Orchestra in the boxes, um yes.
:-: Loved the set, so nostalgic and great.
:-: I love how Edith Head was the highlight of the costume design presentation when she mostly designed modern films, not period, and The Artist won, probs because it was in black and white, when Edith Head won all but two Oscars for black and white films. I bet she's laughing it up.
:-: Tina Fey makes my heart smile.
:-: Angelina Jolie does not.
:-: Jonah Hill makes my face smile.
:-: There's no part of me that doesn't smile when I see Colin Firth in a tuxedo.

Golden Globes: The bad and the ugly

A'ight, here's what I didn't like...I was surprised by how many there are because even though I have very strong opinions I usually don't actually judge too harshly, but you asked for it. Most of my grievances are for proportion and fit issues on dresses that could have been brilliant.

Elle MacPherson, entirely too much going on, puckering at crotch, bad jewelry choice, unflattering proportions, tulle is disjointed from the rest of the gown.

Freida Pinto usually wows me so much. I love her necklace and the material of this gown, but the waist is too high and the tiny ribbon needs to either go or be much more substantial.

Miss Fashion Police herself, Giuliana Rancic. She just has always kind of freaked me out. She is too overworked as a person and this gown is just a disaster.

I don't know why Guliana Rancic wore two gowns, but both were terrible. The high necked thing and extra junk didn't work for either gown, the styling is also a train wreck.

Oh Jessica Biel. Your head is nothing special and your body is unflattered and awkward. The gown is a bad color, cut and material.

I mostly just want Julianna Margulies' chest to look perkier. I feel like boobs in general were sorely neglected at the Globes this year. Since when is it formal wear to tape them down? I also have no idea what the material of this gown is, but it's not doing anyone any favors. Modest yes, flattering NO.

Again a Fashion policeperson in a dud. This gown is to die for and absolutely stunning in and of itself. On a petite girl like Kelly Osbourne it's terrible. I love a good structural piece, but the dress is just too much for Osbourne, and did no one think to hem it appropriately? I'm a sucker for 6" horsehair hems, but they need to be watched so as to not buckle.

Missi Pyle, while the foundation's color is not the greatest it's nothing to scoff at, however the cheap golden tulle over skirt and flower is. Hem length is also off.

Naya Rivera, a center front seam needs to be oh so carefully selected and in this case it should not have been. And where's the rest of the shaping? If it was supposed to be just a tube I could have lived with it sans center front seam. With the seam you get the feeling you need more. The hem and small train is divine though.

Oh Piper Perabo. I had to look up an interview to see why on earth every picture of her in this dress has her doing something dumb with the skirt. Apparently she just thought it was so great that it was nylon! So great she couldn't just let it be. I'm actually a fan of the color, and the skirt, just leave it the freak alone and wear a bra! 2012 at the Globes was not a good time to be a boob apparently.

Golden Globes

Awards season! I honestly don't watch any show except the Oscars, but I watch the pregame for some. Seeing as I don't have a TV however I didn't for the Globes and am basing opinions off photos, e'en though I prefer to see the gowns in motion. Going through the photos on MTV I was just bored with pretty gowns so I basically picked the really unique, but still appropriate gowns as favorites. In no particular order...

I've always had a soft spot for Nicole Kidman, her being 1/4" shorter than me and all. Mad props for wearing heels and props to Keith Urban for looking so chill (or something...) about it. Her body is just absolutely rocking in this gown and the beading or whatever is awesome. Great styling as well.

Tilda Swinton always makes bold choices and if nothing else I applaud her for that. In this case though I love what she's wearing. The color is divine on her and I love the tailoring with the soft skirt. Her shoes are also killer.

I'm not a fan of Claire Danes as an actress, but her gown is simple but unique and modest. I have a feeling there is more to it than this.

Speaking of modest, sleeves are in and while some actresses totally miss the modest but beautiful train I really like Michelle Williams' dress. Simple simple silhouette but beautiful material. I could lose or change the headband.

The one bit I did see of the Globes showed Angelina Jolie sitting down and I knew I loved her dress. I don't think I need to even explain why this dress is so boss and makes my brain hurt just thinking about the work that went into it.

Evan Rachel Wood, not so thrilling silhouette, but those feathers! Black dress taken to the max. Where the construction part of my brain hurt thinking about Jolie's, my meticulous "yes I've pinned on thousands of pieces of chiffon onto a costume" brain bleeds over this dress.

I pick my boys based mostly on classic menswear. A tux has to be oh so special for me to like it despite its veering away from convention. Clive Owen's tux is classic and he's handsome. His (an many others) pants break entirely too much, but knees up is good. I'd prefer a cummerbund or waistcoat bc I hate seeing the white shirt.

Colin Firth, Mr. Well Dressed Englishman himself. Pants too puddley, but still grand. His French cuffs stick out just right.

Leonardo DiCaprio, way to show everyone how it's done. I personally don't like three buttons, but I won't hold it against him. I could leave the watch, but his lapels and bowtie and studs are great.
